The rupture
Added by Nicole Allegar on October 22, 2008 at 07:04PM
About every four years there is a rupture in the edge of the Glacier. What happens is the Glacier moves up to the land, blocking a river. After time the water builds up behind the glaciers creating a lot of pressure on one side of the ice. Once the pressure reaches a certain point it breaks the through the ice. This is the rupture, but the excitement doesn’t stop there. The water only break through the bottom part of the ice creating an ice tunnel. The ceiling of the tunnel eventually becomes weak and falls making a pretty big splash and some good pictures for everyone viewing the glacier that day.
The last rupture was in July of 2008, so we just missed some of the excitement, however it explains the tunnel that is in the picture.
